I was recently gifted a copy of an essay, composed in 2000, by my Leather Brother, slave david stein, which explains, in his own words, the history of how the BDSM motto “Safe, Sane, Mutually Consensual” was first conceived.
An author, thinker, slave, and BDSM activist through his life, david told me personally about these events but I am so grateful to see it in his words, as someone who was there and helped make it happen. I was also fascinated to read about the politics of the phrase and how it evolved over time.
We owe david a debt of gratitude for his work. Though he is no longer with us, I think he would be very happy to see it preserved in the BED Library in honor of his memory and his contribution to Leather.
